Description peter josvai 2023-07-18 10:22:07 UTC
hi,

it would be great to have a range selection method...

EDIT

select all
select range <-- this would be it :)

and a pop-up would ask you to enter the starting page and the end...

How useful would this be?

Whenever one wants to copy text from a lengthy document,
this could come very handy...

.......

It could also be implemented through the Navigator...
say, you CRTL + A...
and then open (pop up) the Navigator...
where there would be "selection range" as a menu item in the top bar...
active when "select all" is active...
and then you could trim the selection...
starting page, end page...

A handy thing like this could make Writer very sympathetic for some people who have successfully used this once...

This is similar to the already-implemented bug 154211: range selection using elements in the navigator.
Given that the navigator does not have a page listing (only a jump-to feature), and that it wouldn't make sense to list hundreds of pages, it can't be implemented in the same way.

Just like we can print a range (or selection) of pages, I think it makes sense to make it easy to select the contents of a range (or selection) of pages.

Jim and Design/UX team, what do you think?

Sounds like a idea rather than a real use case. The term range reminds me on Calc where you define such subset in a matrix. In case of Writer it would be Select Pages: [from] [to].

It's a slow and bulky interaction and I see no benefit.

Peter, since I only can think of a use case as described in ask.libreoffice (selecting a chapter), I'd like to ask, if new feature in LO 7.6
solves your problem.

Is what is shown in the attached demo the idea here?

Likely it is. While I'd rather not put effort into some idea as moving/selecting chapters is easy to do there is on the other hand nothing bad in adding such a function. But it should require customization (so off/hidden by default).

Assigning the ticket to you, Jim.
