Description IT 2012-08-21 14:12:45 UTC
Since Libreoffice 3.5.6 (also 3.6.1 RC1) you can't open Microsoft files which are bigger than 6,85 MB.

Libreoffice 3.5.5 and 3.6.0 open this files without problems.

Steps to reproduce:
- Generate Writer, Calc, Impress File bigger than 6,85 MB (simple way use some bigger images)
- Save as DOC / XLS / PPT (97-2003)
- Try reopen in Libreoffice

And ???

Please provide missing infos: error message? crash report?

Status set to NEEDINFO as we need infos from you to go forward.

Side note: MSO files open fine for me in LO 3.6.1.2 under Linux.

Best regards. JBF

- Writer opens such a file in binary mode (the whole document is shown in special character), instead of importing the DOC file.

- Calc opens the text import wizard, instead of importing the XLS file.

- Impress opens the ASCII filter option, instead of importing the PPT file.

If a file is smaller than 6,85 MB all aplications opens the files without problems.

The error can be reproduced on Windows 7 x64 and Windows XP with LibreOffice 3.5.6 and 3.6.1.1.

3.6.1.2 seems to open these files again without problems.
Comment 3 Olivier R. 2012-08-26 06:49:16 UTC
With LO 3.6.1.2, I can open a DOC file of 16 Mb. On Windows 7.

I have a similar problem. But author is a bit wrong.
We have Example 17 Step 1.xls. We open it in LibO 3.5.6.2 (final release) and change anything you want (in any cell type any value). We save as... file in Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP/2003 (*.xls) format (you even can simply save file). You'll see that file grown in size from 293 kb to 7.84 Mb (Example 17 Step 2.xls). Try to open resaved file Example 17 Step 2.xls in LibO 3.5.6.2 and we see import dialog (Example 17.jpg). LibO 3.5.6.2 corrupts saved files. If we try to open any of attached xls files in LibO 3.6.1.2 (final release ID e29a214) or in MS Office 2007 SP3 then all can be opened without problems.

The same problem described in Bug 54082 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54082
Comment 6 Jens 2012-09-06 08:55:56 UTC
In my experience, it's not about the size. And also not about whether files are created in OpenOffice/LibreOffice.

I have a folder full of Excel 2007 XLS files, varying in size from a few KB to hundreds of KB. All of them can be opened using Version 3.6.0.4 (Build ID: 932b512). None of them can be opened in Version 3.6.1.2 (Build ID: e29a214).

When I try to open such a file in 3.6.1 the Text import wizard comes up and presents some binary data that cannot be imported.

I'm having a similar problem. This triggers on 1 XLS file I opened from a client - all other XLS files on my system seem to work fine. Unfortunately, I can't provide the XLS file as it contains user/pass information that cannot be made public.

When I open the file, LibreOffice opens a "Text Import" screen. I've tried a multitude of different options, but the end result is the "data" comes up as being corrupted. (I've tried different charsets, like UTF-8, to no avail - UTF-8 just brings the data to come up as those standard unicode "boxes".)

Opening the file in a hex editor, I do notice that it looks quite a bit different from another XLS file I have (that opens fine). I can see the data in here, but its offset like an XLS file but it seems to be offset a little differently. (Sorry, very limited hex/xls experience...)

Let me know if there's any way for me to help. Again, unfortunately I can't provide this file but I would if I could.
Comment 9 Michael Mackus 2012-10-31 16:44:16 UTC
I noticed around line 70 (in hex editor, I'm just using VIM hex mode):

In the "VALID" XLS files (they're very similar in contents) each one has an "F" character on line 50 (last column of hex).

However, in the "INVALID" XLS file, there's no data on line 70, but it seems like the "data" starts around line 42 with a "B" character.

Sorry if this isn't much help, if there's any other help I can give let me know.

Also note: My "INVALID" xls file opens fine in Google Docs, Microsoft Office, and I'm sure Open Office (others have reported this corruption doesn't happen with OO).

Hi!

The problem is somehow solved in 3.6.3.2 release. At least, when I'm opening problematic presentation files using File - Open, they are opened normally. In previous releases this approach also didn't work.

I have a similar problem, with some specific .xls files opening with the 'text import' wizard - and on clicking 'ok' getting a corrupt spread-sheet.
This happens under LibreOffice 3.5.7.2 and 3.6.3.2, running on Windows XP/SP3 (Professional or Home), opening the file from Windows Explorer. The spreadsheets appear different under 3.5.7 and 3.6.3. (Using File Open from LO leads to ASCII filter options panel, and meaningless Writer document)

This did not happen under earlier version(s) of LO, for those files I then had - they opened ok.

The files in question came from an Apple-Mac, running Mac OS X 10.5.8 . Created there by "Excel [which] comes as an option for saving spreadsheets and passing them to other Macs and PCs. It is part of Numbers '09 version 2.0.5 which I bought as part of iWork '09 package version 9.0.3."

Opening one using Microsoft Excel 2003 worked ok; on doing save as a new_name.xls (no other changes), the resultant file opened ok in LO (size had dropped from 43KB to 39KB)

Other .xls files (from other (varied) sources) open ok, as expected.

I have a similar problem, with some specific .xls files opening with the 'text import' wizard - and on clicking 'ok' getting a corrupt spread-sheet.
Operating system: Linux 3.5.0.22 with KDE 4.9.4.

Please see my example above: "Example for opening *.xls as text-file, around 20kB size"

The File was created with Excel 2007 and modified with "Quickoffice" on a Nokia-mobile.

My "workaround" is open with OpenOffice 3.4.1 and save as *.ODS. Not the best solution, but ok to survive....

This bug report is about opening files _larger than 6.85MB_. If your difficulty to open a file with Libreoffice does not meet this criterium, please open another bug report.

@IT: do you encounter this behavior anymore with the current versions (LO 4.0.5 or LO 4.1.2) ? In such a case, please could you provide a link (I guess that 6.85 MB is to big to attach it to this bug report) to a file that _you_ can't open with LibreOffice ?

Best regards. JBF
Comment 17 Jean-Baptiste Faure 2013-10-06 07:42:40 UTC
Changed back component to LibreOffice because the bug report is not only about XLS files.

No answer from the reporter since several months so I guess he does not encounter the bug anymore with current release. So closing as WorksForMe.

Please, feel free to reopen if the bug is still there for you.
